The day we took off for a long holiday weekend in VT we were also able to Skype with our family in Ethiopia. Ash and Leni interacted through words, a bit of music and movement, and lots of expression filled exchanges with their sister on the other side of the world. It was so incredible to watch them speak to each other, we're so incredibly fortunate that she has access to Skype through her school computer. Man I want to go back to Ethiopia. But then we had to sign off, blew kisses to each other, and will wait until the stars next align for us all to see each other again. We had a long drive to Vermont ahead of us for Mike and I to process the conversation and the kids to protest taking anything even remotely resembling a decent nap, but when we finally arrived it was all mountains and (real!) snow and fresh air for a whole 3 days.
Leni got to visit the Vermont Teddy Bear Factory with the Grandmas while we went skiing with Ash for one day and put him in ski school for another. Mike and I met in high school while ski racing and nearly every date took place on the hill. We moved to Bozeman, MT to ski (er, um, go to university...) and held seasons passes annually until we graduated. Then we moved to NY. Last weekend was the first time the two of us had a proper ski weekend where we actually got to ski together since, well, way too long ago. Let's just say we're already trying to figure out how to get back on the mountain, yesterday. And Ash loves it. We had a blast skiing with him the first day, but he LOVED being in ski camp with other kids the next day. Just as they were getting ready to shut the lifts down for the day daddy asked Ash how many more runs he'd like to take and Ash said 37. At 4:00 on a day when he'd been on the mountain since 8:30. He slept very well that night. Mike is already plotting ways to convince ski coaches next year that Leni is 3 (she'll be 2 1/2) so that she too can enjoy the joys of ski camp, but at the rate she's taking life we'll be lucky if they don't charge her as a 5 year old. Cause that's how old Ash will be. And she really wants to be just like him, and is frighteningly good at it.
Ash dove back in to school spraying the words I WENT TO VERMONT WITH MY GRANDMAS AND WENT SKIING AND MY SISTER ATE FOOD OFF OF ALL OF THE RESTAURANT FLOORS AND I BEAT DADDY DOWN THE MOUNTAIN TWO TIMES all over everybody in his path. He'd love to be back on the mountain learning how to do flips off of cliffs, and I'm pretty sure Leni is going through some serious ski chalet floor crumb withdrawal right about now.
And daddy? Well, watching his son make it down the mountain all day long completely unassisted and only wanting to go faster and faster and do it again and again pretty much plastered one gigantic smile on his face for forever.
